Pi Hackathon Guidelines 2021
Today, we are kicking off Pi’s first Hackathon as the first event for our developer community. A #BuildPi2gether Hackathon is a collaborative event where Pioneers & developers join to build the future of Pi together. The event will span 7 weeks from June 28-August 10th.
There are two categories of apps to build:
- Ecosystem apps — Apps that improve the Pi ecosystem & functions.
- Business apps — Apps that serve a consumer or commerce product.
Pi Hackathon Prizes 2021 :
In total, up to US$50,000 and 50,000 Pi in prizes per category, which makes $100,000 USD and 100,000 Pi for both categories.
- 1st prize = US$20,000 + 20,000 Pi
- 2nd prize = US$15,000 + 15,000 Pi
- 3rd prize = US$10,000 + 10,000 Pi
- Honorary mentions (5 winners) = US$1000 each + 1,000 Pi
Judges and the Pioneer community will evaluate projects. Winners will be decided by the Pi Core Team based on these ratings.
Winning Pi Hackathon teams have full responsibility for how they will handle their treasury & prize distribution. They will need to designate one account to receive the prize.
To participate in the online hackathon:
- Join the Hackathon on the Brainstorm app.
- Propose an idea or join an existing team.
- Join your Hackathon team’s dedicated Discord channel after receiving an invitation to the new developer Discord server.
- Build your idea with your team until August 10th. Remember certain deadlines — detailed below — such as when to submit a mid-term progress report and final video presentation!
A well-balanced Hackathon team will compromise of experts in:
- Development: Builders of the third-party Pi app with code
- Business: Professionals determining the business viability and growth of the project
- Marketing and Communications: Specialists presenting their product vision to the community
- Design: Artists creating the UI/UX of the app for Pioneers’ usability
- Others: Pi Hackathon is open to everyone! Communicate and utilize your special skill sets to contribute to the future of Pi. Reach out to teams and share your expertise.
An eligible Pi Hackathon submission must satisfy the following criteria and include the following information:
- The submission must be a functional Pi app correctly integrated with Pi SDK and accessible on Pi Browser through a URL.
- It must also include a link to a short video introducing your project (upload to Youtube & submit a link). The final video presentation should showcase the problem & solution, the intended audience, and a demonstration of the App’s functionality.
Pi Hackathon Latest Updates
Updated Pi Hackathon Agenda
Note: We’ve updated the Pi Hackathon agenda both to reflect new extended deadlines and to include more events and resources for teams and developers. This updated plan both allows more time for developers to work on their apps and provides more events and resources to facilitate their team building and app development.
You can participate in the Hackathon through the Brainstorm app on the Pi home screen.
If participants have any questions about the Pi Hackathon, please join the Pi Ecosystem Development Discord also through the Brainstorm app and share questions you may have.

New events and resources
The Pi Core Team is announcing Hackathon networking events through Zoom. One of these events already occurred on July 22nd last week. Please refer to the updated Hackathon agenda for future networking events. These events will help connect technical developers and project teams. After finding an interesting project, developers can then search and apply it on the Brainstorm app.
Technical office hours – Core Team tech members will host office hours to answer technical questions about building Pi apps, e.g. using Pi SDK, Sandbox, Developer Portal, Pi App Engine, Brainstorm app, etc. Please refer to the updated Hackathon Agenda for office hour times.
Hackathon teams must turn in only one type of midpoint check-in by August 15 — either a video submission or a Zoom presentation. Video submissions can be sent through this linked form or on the Pi Ecosystem Developer Discord server #video-update. A live Zoom presentation will be an additional format for teams to submit their midpoint progress reports, the details of which are below.
